Antique Roadshow or A Good Sign?

The exploration of what the future holds for the MAS 90 and MAS 200 accounting software products made by Sage Software continues as we take a look at a recent announcement made by Sage's Sales Department.

In an effort to rally the troops and communicate their message, Sage sales recently announced that they would be hitting the road, traveling the states sponsoring get-together sessions with MAS90 and MAS 200 VAR's to talk about the importance of selling the MAS 90 and MAS 200 products and communicating their intent to further develop the links between MAS and other Sage Software products.

From one perspective, this could be a good sign. Sage wants to open lines of communication with it's vendors and lay out some jargon about the MAS products. Communication is always a good thing, and kudos to Sage for taking the time and effort to communicate with their base.

From another perspective, it appears they want to simply give their version of self-help and success stories so as to press on with the sale of new MAS product and largely avoid the topic of their aged technology.

Tell me what you think? Leave a comment.

Is Sage's MAS tour a good sign for the future of MAS90 and MAS200?

Or is the tour simply an antique roadshow?

My company Scanco has been a Sage MASter Developer since 1990. I strongly disagree with your "aged technology" characterization of the MAS 90/MAS 200 software.

Most software companies have hundreds of thousands if not millions of lines of code in their products. This code is an investment. Software companies cannot afford to scrap what they have and chase the latest "new technology".

Even Microsoft with their billions, has not been able to pull this off. MS customers are still being offered Dynamics, Navision and Solomon that you might also deem aged technology. Only Axapta which was recently developed uses some of the latest languages and tools.

I have been hearing about MS project "Green" for years and still have not seen much come to market.

Sage has been upgrading their system with their Business Framework and this allows them to upgrade the technology without scrapping what they already have.

These Business Objects will add extensibility and functionality to the product as more modules incorporate the framework.

If you ran a software company as I do, I believe you might have a different opinion of Sage's technology.

I think the future is very bright for these products since they have a huge installed base and strong name recognition.

Thank you Paul for your comment. We appreciate your interest in being involved and value your opinion.

As a master developer of Sage technology it is understandable that you would have concerns. You have invested years in your bar code and inventory management enhancements for MAS. Business owners involved with Sage Software (of which I am one) are right to question Sage technology - and a good discussion is healthy.

You are correct that other software manufacturers have either never released or abandoned technologies that did not meet certain viability. The question here is however - is MAS 90 one of those products who's leadership at Sage and technology from 1980 - may have run its course.

Microsoft Dynamics is a significantly superior product technologically to MAS and engineers have soundly analyzed comparisons between MAS and Dynamics where Dynamics trumped MAS on a large majority of technological factors - just google it and read it for yourself. NetSuite represents current tech trends for Business Applications and is taking the industry by storm - with due cause - and is leaps and bounds over MAS technologically.

Thank you for mentioning the MAS Business Objects. We are working on our next piece that addresses MAS Business Object technoogy.

Thanks again for your comment, it is always nice to hear from you.
